Types of Ink Cartridges

1. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) ink cartridges
   These cartridges have the same brand name as the printer and are usually made by the manufacturer of the printer. These ink cartridges will usually work best for that particular printer and normally come with a warranty from the manufacturer if they don't work for some reason. The drawback with OEM cartridges is that they are also the most expensive type of ink cartridge.
   
   
2. Compatible ink cartridges
   These cartridges are made by many different companies than the manufacturer of the printer. They are brand new cartridges that fit your printer, but are made by companies that are not affiliated with the printer brand. These cartridges generally work very well at a much lower cost than the OEM cartridges.
   
   
3. Remanufactured ink cartridges
   These are cartridges that have been used previously and refilled with ink by the manufacturer. There are also refill kits available that will allow you to refill your own used cartridges. Occasionally remanufactured cartridges will have damaged connections that cause them to not work as well, but cartridges can normally be refilled as many as 10 times without noticing any drop in printing performance.

Compatible ink cartridges or remanufactured cartridges are generally the cheapest choice. Or you can choose to refill your own cartridges to save even more money.
